Review of the Skytop Lodge

Skytop Lodge in the Poconos - EveningS

The main lobby of the Skytop LodgeSkytop Lodge dates back to 1928. The main lodge is an imposing, stately  stone Dutch-Colonial style building. The expansive main lobby is warmly paneled and is furnished with an array of comfortable sofas and chairs. Tea is usually served here daily. The porch just outside offers a beautiful view of the mountains.

Outdoor Activities

There are countless opportunities to enjoy the great outdoors. The resort has over 5000 acres.  There are dozens of trails for  hiking and cross country skiing ranging from very easy to rugged . We particularly enjoyed the trail to the falls . You can park at the lower end of the trail near the fishing pond. The trail runs roughly parallel to the creek all the way to the falls . For the most part, the trail is about the size of dirt road and is paved in gravel . As you get closer to the falls , the trail becomes narrower . There are several spots with benches and even a gazebo where you can sit and take in an the tranquil beauty . For a small trail , the scenery is constantly changing . You begin in more of a marshland and woodland . As you approach the falls the scenery becomes more of a small rocky gorge cut into the landscape over centuries .

The falls themselves are small but extremely picturesque . You might need to hang around for a while to get an ideal picture taking opportunity as the number of people at the falls constantly ebbs and flows .

There is an alternate trail to and from the trails that is slightly more challenging.

Nature Trails at Skytop Lodge Resort

Skiing

Our son was nine years old and this was his second lesson . Skytop has its own private slope and lift . instructors were extremely helpful and patient. There’s a porch around the lodge where parents can easily observe their kid's lessons.

The trails are fitted with snowmaking equipment. They were relatively busy but nowhere near as crowded as the major resorts.

Ice Skating

Skytop has it's own enclosed ice skating rink which is located a few hundred yards from the main building. Guests can rent skates or showshoes. They have plenty of hot chocolate to warm you up.

Dining

The main dining room is large and traditionally furnished . A few of the tables offer spectacular views . Breakfast is a buffet

If you want to try something different , you can try and lunch at the Lakeside lodge . In nice weather it’s an easy walk from the main building . You can also drive down and park if you wish . The lodge is situated on Skytop’s lake . It’s more airy and modern than the main building .

There is a small café located in the basement which offers Light Fare most of the day .

Rooms

The rooms in the main building are not large as is normal for hotels of that era. However, our room was comfortable even with three of us. The suites will, of course, provide more room. You can also try the rooms at the lakeside lodge which is considerably newer.

Tower

The observation tower is open throughout the day . This provides an excellent panoramic view of the grounds and surrounding mountains. It's definitely worth the trip.

New Years Eve

(reviewed 2004) Skytop offers a kid-friendly New Year's Eve party held in the main lobby which doubles as their ballroom. We had live music, food and a cash bar. At midnight the guests wandered out to the back porch to watch an impressive fireworks display. Afterwards there is a New Year's buffet banquet. This isn't a couple of light snacks. It is a full buffet with an endless variety of delicacies ranging from seafood to steak to deserts.

Summary

The Skytop Resort is a truly great place for families and couples who enjoy the great outdoors. They offer activities for just about any experience level as well as lessons.
